Dakota Combo competed in the prestigious Charles Mingus High School Competition:
Presented with the Mingus Spirit Award
The Dakota Combo and director Adam Linz traveled to New York City in February to compete in the Charles Mingus High School Competition. The Charles Mingus Institute and Manhattan School of Music selected the top high school big bands and combos from throughout the country by reviewing live recordings. Six big bands and six combos were selected to be finalists and performed live in New York City at the Manhattan School of Music. The Dakota Combo was only one out of two bands from the Midwest.
While in NYC, the Combo attended master classes for instruments and sections, lectures, films and clinics that explored aspects of Mingus’ music, followed by a student Mingus jam. This was a great honor for the Dakota Combo students and MacPhail’s jazz coordinator Adam Linz. At the end of the competition, the Dakota Combo was presented with the Mingus Spirit Award.
