The Honors Recitals are distinguished student recitals at MacPhail. There are four per year: three Honors Recitals and one Junior Honors Recital. Students must audition before a panel of faculty judges and be selected as a finalist in order to perform. The judges’ decisions are based on the highest demonstrated musical and artistic merits of the student at the age and ability level he or she is performing. Finalists have their biographies published in a recital booklet for them as a keepsake of their accomplishment.

Department Recitals are school-wide recitals open to students of all ages and abilities within an instrument family. In addition to being great mid-term goals, they are also a great way for students to hear new music and see other students performing. Participation in these recitals is a benefit of being a registered MacPhail student and adds the overall “MacPhail experience” – these opportunities and memories will stay with students and families for years to come.

Master Classes are public lessons between the master teacher and the student. Typically, students audition to be selected to perform a piece at a high level for the master teacher on stage. They then receive feedback, advice and coaching. Master classes are wonderful learning opportunities for both the student and the audience. Workshops are more hands-on events. While each workshop is different, they are typically geared towards a specific instrumental, vocal or compositional technique that involves participation – in one form or another – from the attendees.
Many teachers host Studio Recitals for the students in their studio once or twice each year. These recitals are a wonderful opportunity for students to perform with their peers in the same instrument area. It’s also a great chance to get to know some of the other students that study with your teacher. Check with your teacher for dates and times.
The Adult Student Soirées are performance opportunities meant for adult students who want to share the enjoyment of music in a no-stress, no-pressure performance situation. The soirées are open to adult students of all instruments, ensembles and ability levels and are held in a lounge-like setting in room 607. There’s no stage, no program, and no pressure: just a room full of friends and the warmth of good music … and thunderous applause of encouragement. While this is not a public performance but performers are invited to bring guests. Seating is limited so no more than one or two guests per performer. Contact Jon Iverson for more information.
