Frequently Asked Questions
I’ve already registered for in-person lessons at MacPhail, but I’m interested in substituting Live Online Lessons for a few of my in-person lessons. Is that possible?
Yes, MacPhail offers Combined In-person and Live Online Lessons. More than 40 of MacPhail’s instructors have experience in offering flexibility to their students with Live Online Lessons. Talk to your instructor about this possibility.
What if I experience technical issues during my lesson?
In the rare case that MacPhail’s server or hardware fails, preventing video calling for more than 20 percent of the scheduled lesson, the lesson will be made up by the MacPhail instructor at a later date with no additional cost to the student. If the technical issue is generated from the student side, the lesson will not be made up.
Are there any disadvantages to choosing Live Online Lessons over in-person lessons?
Video calling compresses the sound of your instrument, making it harder for your instructor to hear certain musical intricacies (tone, dynamics, voicing, etc.). However, by exchanging pre-recorded audio tracks and videos with your instructor or by choosing Combined In-person and Live Online Lessons, this issue can be greatly diminished.
There is also a very small delay in Live Online Lessons which can make it difficult for teacher and student to play together in perfect ensemble. To work around this problem, MacPhail online instructors have created video and audio backing tracks for students to work with. Instructors also encourage students to be involved in other in-person ensemble experiences.
How can I be sure that Live Online Lessons are a good fit for me or my child?
If you are not completely satisfied with the quality of instruction, you have the option of withdrawing from additional instruction after four Live Online Lessons, and will receive a refund for the remainder of that semester’s tuition..
