Welcome to the MacPhail Center for Music, All-State Audition Video Tutorial Project!
We hope you will enjoy the presentations. Our goal is to present a performance of each of the following All-State etudes along with lesson segments to help you prepare for your All-State audition.
How to use these videos
In addition to viewing the videos on your instrument, we encourage you to view segments from instruments not your own. You will notice common themes, such as phrasing and rhythm throughout all of the videos. It’s possible the way one teacher talks about phrasing or rhythm will really hit home with you, even though it was not about your instrument. Teresa Campbell’s (Violin) Six Tips for a Successful Audition is great advice for anyone auditioning. Additionally percussion players wanting their first great conga lesson, check out the segment under Jazz Auxiliary Percussion entitled Exercises for Conga Techniques and Closing Comments. The way Brad Shermock talks about funk in his Jazz Trumpet video will be a good lesson for anyone wanting to develop their feel!
