Child-adult classes
Child-adult classes provide opportunities for young children and their caregivers to explore the world of music together. . Adult participation is a necessary component in making the class successful. You will experience music through integrated arts activities such as movement, instrument exploration, sensory/visual arts, songs, rhymes and literature. The curriculum is developmentally appropriate and stimulating for young children. Reminder: Only registered students are allowed in MacPhail early childhood music classes. Please make other arrangements for siblings.
Music for Baby and You – Fall

The perfect activity for families who have recently welcomed an infant into their lives. MacPhail’s Early Childhood faculty shares lullabies, songs, massages, finger plays, wiggling and bouncing games with you and your baby. This class is a wonderful way to begin a musical life.

Musical Explorations – Fall

Explore music with your curious, active toddler. You and your child will explore familiar and new sounds, rhythm instruments, and large motor play through songs, rhymes, dancing, sensory play and story time. Musical activities with toddlers enhance language development and internalize steady beat. Be inspired to create a musical home to enjoy throughout the year!

Musical Make-Believe – Fall

Imagine how music can come alive! Discover how sound is produced in instruments by tapping, plucking, bowing and buzzing. The songs and rhymes tap into a 3-4 year olds amazing capacity for creative, imaginative play. Prepare your child for child-independent music classes and instrument specific programs.

Family Music Class – Fall
Tuition $150 for the first child; $80 for each additional child (at least one adult for every three children).
Price is per session.
Ages 6 weeks–4 years with parent/caregiver
Our family music class provides an opportunity to explore music in a multi-age setting. Children are exposed to a variety of songs, rhymes, literature, movement and instruments. Children further explore music through visual arts and sensory exploration. Experience the joy of building a musical community.

Musical Movers – Fall
Tuition $275

Children love to move, move, move! This class provides a creative outlet for your child’s active imagination and physical energy. Children will respond to musical concepts, and improve their motor skills through guided activities and their own creative ideas. These activities will enhance their listening skills, and promote free responses to rhythm and body control/coordination skills.

Child-Independent Classes
Our child-independent classes provide opportunities for children to explore music within a supportive peer group setting. Children participate without their parent/caregivers to promote independent thinking, problem-solving and musical exploration. Starting the second week of classes, caregivers are encouraged to sign-up to participate in or observe a class. We encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity; participating in your child’s class shows how you value his or her musical discoveries. Year-long sequential lessons.
Musical Trolley – Fall

CRASH, BOOM, BANG ZING! In the fall, Musical trolley students explore and play a variety of percussion instruments from temple blocks to timpani, as well as many different stringed folk instruments. Through songs, instruments, creative movement, listening, visual arts and literature, children learn about musical concepts such as: piano/forte, tempo, pitch and musical form. Prepare your child for future musical study – they may even pick their favorite instrument in class!

Musical World – Fall

Take a musical journey around the world! In the fall, musical world students explore Native America, Africa, Latin America, Asian and European cultures through songs, folk tales, visual art and ethnic instruments. Children expand their musical knowledge by learning to read rhythmic notation, playing rhythm instruments and creating through improvisation. Musical World is a great next step to further prepare for instrument specific study.

Musical Adventures – Fall

Musical Adventures students expand upon the skills and knowledge they gained as Musical Trolley and Musical World students. Children will grow rhythmically, melodically and creatively through instrument specific study and musical games. In the fall, the children will spend time playing and learning more about specific instruments such as piano and other instruments as well as build rhythm reading, note reading and sight-singing skills. This class is great preparation for instrument specific classes for children.

Your favorite Early Childhood Music classes as one-week camps! You may register for these camps through MacPhail, with the exception of Musical Trolley and Musical World at the Minnesota Zoo and Eastman Nature Center. MacPhail’s musical trolley takes a special trip to the Minnesota Zoo. “Carnival of the Animals”by Camille Saint-Saens sets the stage for a parade of musical magic led by Minnesota Zoo and family farm animals. Children will express their creative potential as they explore musical and animal habitats through singing, rhyming, moving and creating.

Nature makes its own music. This camp will provide children the opportunity to experience music and nature through integrated arts activities. Children will sing, move, and create while learning more about nature. Together children will learn about musical concepts and begin to develop their musicianship skills while trying different instruments. Students who attend at Birch Lake: One day will take place at the Tamarack Nature Center in White Bear Lake to provide campers a hands-on experience with the sounds of nature. Take a musical journey around the world! In this week-long camp, students will go on new adventures as they explore early Minnesota pioneer days—fur trappers, Ojibwe and pioneers. They will also explore cultures from other countries such as Germany, the Philippines, Central America, Israel, Egypt and South Africa, through songs and rhythmic notation, exploration of ethnic instruments and opportunities to accompany, create and improvise.

Come on an adventure in music and the arts. Together we will experience music through the integrated arts. Knowledge gained through their school music programs will be further enhanced through hands-on activities that will further develop skills such as sight singing, music reading and notation, improvisation and ensemble playing skills through singing, movement, instrument playing, literature, visual arts and exposure to multi-cultural music.

Policies and Locations
For your convenience Early Childhood Music classes are offered in Minneapolis, Apple Valley and White Bear Lake. Classes are held at MacPhail Center unless otherwise noted.

Make-Up Classes
Please notify MacPhail in advance of any absence by calling the Student Service Center at 612.321.0100. Prior notification of absences does not exempt students from payment. Students are charged for all classes during the semester, including those missed. Makeup classes are available for most classes. Please limit the number of makeup requests to one-fourth of the total semester classes to maintain continuity for your child and others in the class. Classes must be made up during the semester in which you are registered.
Multiple Siblings in One Class
If you are registering more than one child in the same adult-child class session we encourage you to keep a ratio of one adult per child. One-on-one interaction in the class makes the experience more rewarding for both the adults and children involved. The only exception is the Family Music Class.
Sibling Policy
Only registered students are allowed in Early Childhood Music classes. Please make other arrangements for siblings. Adult visitors are welcome any time!
Sibling Discount Policy
When you register one child for Early Childhood Music classes at MacPhail for full tuition, each additional child in your immediate family will receive a 10% discount for Early Childhood Music classes for the same semester. To get this discount, you must register all children by August 25, 2008. This discount does not apply to the Family Music Class.
Students with Special Needs
All of MacPhail’s Early Childhood Music programs are accessible to children with special needs through adapted instruction, individually or in small groups. We also offer a class for young students with special needs.
Waiting Lists
Students may request to be placed on a waiting list for a full class if complete registration and payment information is received, (payments will not be processed unless the student is placed in a class). You will be contacted by phone only if a space becomes available.
