Classes for Children
Piano for Children

Through games, singing, movement, listening and composition, small groups of children will learn basic piano skills and musicianship. You are involved in your child’s learning process through an orientation session, observations and printed lesson summaries. Children must be in kindergarten or first grade. Children must have an instrument at home for practicing.

Continuing Piano for Children

Don’t let your child forget what they have learned in Piano for Children. Continuing Piano for Children will focus on developing music reading skills on both the treble and bass clefs. Games, movement, rhythm and listening will be incorporated to strengthen the children’s piano playing skills.

Music Tree – Beginning Piano

The Music Tree offers an alternative to private piano instruction for children. Classes consist of a small group of students who meet for one hour each week. In a fun and exciting classroom setting, students will develop basic music reading skills, a strong rhythmic sense, a natural relaxed piano technique, as well as composing and improvising skills.

Piano and Violin Sampler

Unsure of which instrument your child should study? Would you like them to try two instruments – piano and violin – before you make a commitment? Children receive an 8-week introduction to both the piano and violin. Students will need access to a piano; MacPhail will provide violins. Parents are encouraged to attend class with their child during the violin portion, in order to better assist the child in home practice.

Violin for Children

This class teaches beginning violin using a repertoire of multi-cultural songs, movement, games, and singing. Students learn basic violin technique while acquiring musicianship skills including imitation, note reading, pitch development and playing with a pleasing tone. Parents are required to observe lessons and take an active role in practice. Children must have an appropriately sized instrument. Violin for Children has a two semester curriculum; it’s suggested that students enroll in both.

Percussion for Children
Tuition $350

Instructor: Eric Strom
Children will learn to play the snare drum, marimba, timpani, drum set, vibraslap, cabasa, gong, congas, bongos and more. Through games, movement, creative activities, listening and ensemble playing, children will develop a strong sense of rhythm plus basic music skills and technique. Students need only to provide their own practice pad and drumsticks. Percussion for Children has a two semester curriculum.
For a complete experience, students should enroll in both semesters.

Guitar for Children

This class combines classical and folk guitar styles in a relaxed learning environment. Students will learn how to read music, play and compose melodies and a variety of strums and picking patterns. Students will need a 3/4 to full sized nylon-stringed classical guitar. Parents are required to attend the last 10 minutes of each class. Guitar for Children has a two semester curriculum; it is suggested that students enroll in both.

Sing Out! (Apple Valley Children’s Choir)

Join MacPhail’s exciting new children’s choir, Sing Out!, for children ages 8-12. This choir welcomes students with and without special needs to join together for fun singing and music making activities. Designed to celebrate the unique gifts of each student, Sing Out! will help each child discover their own voice. Family and friends are invited to attend a performance at the end of the semester.

Vocal Adventures for the Young Singer

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to take voice lessons? Find out in a fun class designed for those who would like to explore and develop their solo singing voice. Students will be introduced to the basics of voice study such as posture, breathing, tone production, and musical expression. Our journey will include songs from Classical to Pop, and each student will have the opportunity to receive individual coaching. The “final destination” is a special student concert!

Whether you are a serious student of opera, musical theater or simply wish to enhance your interpretive skills as a singer, this lab offers a variety of techniques to help bring your performances to life. Customize this class for your own needs by doing detail work on a couple of audition pieces or working to get a portfolio of pieces performance ready. Please bring a song/aria with sheet music in your key, preferably memorized and in English, to sing on the first day of class.

Composition Workshop: Jazz Composition

Instructor: Billy Fox
McKnight Visiting Composer Billy Fox will be presenting a series of composition workshops this fall. Billy Fox, director, composer and percussionist, has received grants from the Puffin Foundation and the American Composers Forum (as a McKnight Visiting Composer), and was selected first alternate to the 2006 Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission's Creative Artists Fellowship. Billy's compositions are featured in the soundtrack of the short film Rhyme Animal, directed by Phil Roc (producer of Sony Music’s Made in Heaven—The Making of Kind of Blue). Possible workshop topics include: “Intentionally Restricted Note Choices”, “A World Away: Improvisational Music Outside of Jazz”, “Give the Drummer Some: Rhythm as the Organizing Principle”, “Other Forms of Freedom: Beyond Free Jazz”, “From A to Z: Linear Development in Jazz Tunes”, “Stories Without Words: Program Music”.

Beginning Composition

Work with the basic elements of musical composition such as melodic writing, harmonizing, accompaniment patterns and ostinatos to create two short pieces for the instruments of your choice. Basic music reading skills are necessary, but no composition experience is required. Bring your own manuscript paper.

Study the creation and production of popular songs with two of the Twin Cities’ best-known musicians. Analyze song structure, develop lyrics and learn instrumental arranging and pre-production techniques in preparation for a studio recording session. Work on pre-production in class, then travel to a recording studio where one or two student songs will be recorded.

Opera Workshop with Audrey Stottler

Why travel across the country when you can study with a world-renowned performer and teaching artist in Minneapolis? Audrey Stottler of the New York Metropolitan Opera, will be presenting an Opera Workshop at MacPhail Center for Music for classical voice students. The workshop is open to all students studying classical music, lieder, opera arias and art songs. No audition is necessary to participate. Students are asked to prepare 1–3 selections for study.

The Joy of Klezmer

Want to find your roots or plant new ones in the rich soil of Easter European Ashkenazic Jewish music? You’ll learn the modes which make Klezmer music so compelling. We’ll play some of the most popular freylachs, horas, and bulgars in the repertoire. Fiddles, clarinets, trumpets, accordions, keyboards and percussion are the principal instruments in Klezmer bands but anyone is welcome.
