• Peruse the course descriptions and select an ensemble that interests you.
• Check for pre-requisites. If an audition or placement interview is required, call the instructor listed in the course description.
• When the audition or placement interview has been completed, call Student Services to register at 612.321.0100.

Ensembles for Children 9 - 12 years old
JAZZ CLASSES AND COMBOS
MacPhail Jazz Combos
Tuition $282 ($23.50 per class)
Ages 12–Adult
12 week session beginning week of October 4, 2010
Classes are 60 minutes long and meet once per week.
Placement Auditions for the young Combos will be held on Saturday, September 11, 2010.
Jazz is a uniquely American art form that is treasured around the world. Jazz is spontaneous and fun; it expands the imagination and sharpens the mind. The positive environment of the Jazz Combo is perfect to develop your skills as an improvising musician. All levels are offered, from true beginners to highly advanced musicians.
Prerequisite: 2 years playing experience and/or private instruction

Step 2) We will contact you the following week so you can register for the group that fits your style
Step 3) Play jazz with musicians of similar skill levels and interests

Step 2) Adam will consult with your previous Combo instructor to find the group that is right for you – no audition necessary.
Times and locations will be determined based upon the results of the placement auditions.

Buckets and Sticks
Tuition $282 ($23.50 per class)
Ages 10–12
Instructor: David Birrow
Drum a cool groove on a bucket. Improvise a solo on a tin can. Even if you’ve had no formal music lessons you can be part of this fun new ensemble using every day items as musical instruments. Students will learn basic drumming and rhythmic skills and how to improvise their own rhythms.

This band teaches songs through written music and CD’s, improvising and “jamming” techniques. The last class is a performance.

Dakota Combo
Tuition is provided by the Dakota Foundation for Jazz Education

Now in its fourth season, MacPhail’s premier high school jazz combo, the Dakota Combo is an outstanding group of students selected through a live audition process. With generous support from the Dakota Foundation for Jazz Education, this group will rehearse and perform with a national guest artist at the Dakota Jazz Club in the fall as well as a final concert at MacPhail in the spring of 2011. Under the direction of jazz artist Adam Linz rehearsals will be held every other Thursday throughout the 2010-2011 school year.

Tired of always playing solo repertoire? Are you returning to piano after a lengthy sabbatical? Join MacPhail’s piano ensemble to meet and collaborate with other pianists. Students will work together on duets, duos and larger ensemble pieces. Two years of previous private piano instruction is required. Students are expected to practice outside of the class with their partner(s) and should to be prepared to play at all sessions. There will be a recital at the end of each semester. This performance-oriented group for highly motivated percussion players, is MacPhail's premier percussion ensemble. Rimshots! performs concerts in a variety of settings throughout the community. Auditions are held every summer for the following school year. Performing in Rimshots! is a year-long commitment. Calling all traditional cello students! Are you looking for a fun ensemble experience to use your developing playing skills? MacPhail’s Suzuki Department invites you to participate in its cello choir and string orchestra even if you are not a Suzuki student. Students will be placed in a string orchestra based upon their playing level. All students will participate in the same cello choir. We will be playing a different “book” each semester celebrating the music of George Green, Clair Musser, Gordon Peters and contemporary composers and arrangers. Celebrate Minnesota’s rich choral tradition and be a part of a brand new partnership between MacPhail and the Minnesota Chorale. The Voices of Experience Choir is for adults over the age of 50 who want to be a part of a community of musicians, singing standard classical/traditional choral repertoire. Voices of Experience will present a joint concert with the Minnesota Chorale and its Minneapolis Youth Chorus on November 19 and 21, 2010. All potential singers will be asked to meet with the conductor for a voice check prior to the start of rehearsals (voice check day and time, TBD).
