Students who attend MacPhail White Bear Lake: One day will take place at the Tamarack Nature Center in White Bear Lake to provide campers a hands-on experience with the sounds of nature.

Study the works of living and historic composers to understand how other composers think and solve problems. Receive coaching from MacPhail composition faculty on recent and current works. Hear your compositions performed by professional musicians. You will be asked to submit a score for review prior to the camp. Space is limited, register early!

Training Prerequisites and Course Order
To take Suzuki teacher training, teachers must be Active members of the SAA. Every Child Can! (ECC) is required prior to taking Book 1. Courses must be taken in order through Book 2: ECC, Book 1, Book 2.
Audition Requirement
To qualify as a participant in Suzuki teacher training courses, applicants must submit a DVD video audition to the SAA, preferably prior to course enrollment. DVDs should be submitted at least 8 weeks prior to the course start date, with the required fee and a completed application form. For courses occurring during the summer, applicants submitting auditions later than March 31 may not receive audition results prior to the course, even if meeting the above deadlines. If submitted later than 8 weeks before the course start date, audition results determining participant eligibility may not be available prior to the course, and will require late audition fees. If auditions are not accepted, course work will not be eligible for SAA registration— even if course work was completed. Required Course Preparation
All teacher training participants are asked to prepare the repertoire to be studied to the point of fluent performance. Memorization is not required but is recommended. Additionally, participants should be conversant with the ideas presented in Dr. Suzuki’s book Nurtured by Love. All participants will be performing in class. Strings and woodwinds are expected to provide their own instruments. It is recommended that participants bring an audio recorder and a notebook to all sessions. 100% attendance is required for registering the course.

Gain confidence and independence as you play in small groups with no more than two students playing each part. Improve your ensembles skills and play more expressively with the help of MacPhail string faculty and teaching interns. Camp will conclude with a final performance for family and friends.

Join us for String Academy, a comprehensive and intensive full-day string camp for middle school and high school students. String Academy offers the complete string experience from orchestra, to quartets, to private lessons to alternative string styles and more! Be among the first students to try out newly composed string quartet music by composer Geoff Hudson as part of the Quartet Project, a national project for string chamber music programs. Discover new ways to play your instrument in workshops led by local “bluegrassical” musicians, The Orange Mighty Trio. Round out your experience with private lessons, theory classes and field trips. The camp will conclude with a final performance of all ensembles on August 20.

Join us for the 2010 Sartory String Quartet Institute! Students at this two-week Institute are placed in two string quartets with other students of similar age and proficiency. All quartets receive daily coachings in preparation for recital performances at the end of the institute. Students work closely with both faculty and interns throughout the day, as well as participate in classes with guest faculty on topics such as chamber music, rehearsal technique, and improvisation.
Audition: 3-octave scale, piece that shows tone and technique and prepared excerpts will soon be available on-line.

The Allegro Orchestra Camp now in its 11th year, is pleased to join MacPhail’s summer camp offerings to continue to provide its same high-quality, unique and fun summer orchestra experience for young musicians. Students will be taught by many of the top professional musicians and music teachers in the Twin Cities through daily rehearsals, small group sectionals, workshops and performances. Through placement auditions, students will be placed in one of three orchestras for daily rehearsals and sectional coachings. The Allegro Orchestra Camp will continue to feature a professional orchestra-in-residence, Allegro Con Brio, for all participants to have the opportunity to learn from the best. The advanced camp students will play right alongside them, not just at a rehearsal, but in public as part of the final concert. Literally playing the same music as their professional counterparts, the students have the chance to fulfill their dream of sharing the stage. The Allegro Orchestra Camp provides students with the curriculum and staff equal to national camps, at a fraction of the cost – don’t miss it!

Interested in collaborating with other adult musicians and gaining new insights on your playing? Be a part of the popular Adult Chamber Music Camp. Attend or perform in a master class led by well-known local professional musicians. All camp attendees will be placed into two chamber ensembles and each ensemble will receive 5 coachings throughout the course of the camp. Chamber groups can opt to perform in a final concert for family and friends followed by a reception. Even if you are a beginner you can discover the joys of playing chamber music. Join us for MacPhail’s Introductory Chamber Music Camp for Adults where you will be placed in small ensembles of 3-5 players who are playing at a similar level. Learn the basics of playing in an ensemble and prepare yourself for a lifetime of music-making. Participants in this camp are invited to attend both the master class and the performance of the Adult Chamber Music Camp the following week at no additional charge. Placement in either Introductory Chamber Camp or the Adult Chamber Music Camp is based on a placement audition for coordinator Jeremy Swider. Mallet Keyboard Camp

Designed for the serious intermediate to advanced mallet keyboard percussionist, this camp will cover a variety of instruments and techniques. From marimba to xylophone, orchestra bells to vibraphone and chimes to crotales, students will have a chance to develop their playing skills on all instruments in small ensembles and large ensembles. Students will design and custom build their own mallets and hone their sightreading skills for both the bass and treble clef. All students will perform in a recital for family and friends on the last day of camp.

An intensive and fun five-day creative experience for percussionists wishing to become more serious about their study. You’ll cover performance technique for a variety of percussion instruments including snare drum, drum set, keyboard mallets and timpani. Each day you’ll play in an ensemble, attend group classes, make your own mallets and learn tons about all areas of percussion. Participants must have two years prior experience in band or one year individual instruction.

Discover a fascinating new kind of music—learn to play traditional Indonesian music on the spectacular set of instruments known as a gamelan. You will play gongs of various sizes, metallophones (like xylophones, but metal), and other instruments that join together in this form of collaborative music making. No previous musical experience is needed. Joko will teach you basic techniques and musical forms, and from the first day you will be playing real pieces of music. You will gain skills that are valuable in any form of music making— listening, focus, and cooperative effort. And what’s more—the learning process is FUN! The camp will end with an informal performance so that you can share your new abilities with parents and friends.

Copper Street Brass Camp

From trumpets to tubas, MacPhail’s new Brass Camp gives students the chance to focus on the unique and exciting sounds of brass instruments. Lead by members of the Copper Street Brass Quintet, students will have the opportunity to play in both large and small ensembles composed of only brass instruments and participate in instrument specific coaching sessions. The daily schedule will also include classes in composing music, jazz improvisation. Family and friends are invited to attend a student ensemble concert on the last day of camp as well as a performance by the Copper Street Brass Quintet on Thursday evening.

Daily activities include small ensemble coachings and rehearsals, master classes by members of the Minnesota Orchestra clarinet section, tips for successful reed routines, basic instrument maintenance, improving and maintain your tone and technique, history and repertoire. This camp is designed for young musicians who want to improve their playing skills and learn how to collaborate with fellow rockers. Each student will be placed in a band coached by a MacPhail teaching artist in preparation for a performance on the last day of camp. This camp is open to singers as well as students who play guitar, bass, drums and keyboards. You must bring your own instrument and amps to the camp. A final rock concert will be held at First Avenue/7th St. Entry for family and friends.

Rock out with other musicians in a band coached by MacPhail faculty performing both cover songs and original songs. Attend workshops on songwriting, how to rehearse, and an instrument specific class. Perform at the legendary First Ave 7th St. Entry on the final day of the camp. This camp is for singers, guitar, bass, drums, and keyboard players looking to meet new people and have fun playing rock music. No self-contained bands are accepted – take what you learn at Rock Week back to your band. Participants must supply their own drums, guitar, bass, and amps and have had at least one year of lessons on their instrument.

Work with local artists as you select your digital samples in the PCYC computer lab and write your own lyrics. Students who qualify for free and reduced lunch can attend the camp for only $25.

July 6-9 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Play music, get up on stage, bake bread and construct books while exploring the rich cultural organizations within the Minneapolis riverfront district. Arts on the River Camp offers children a new experience each day at four top arts centers, including the Guthrie Theater, Mill City Museum, Minnesota Center for Book Arts and MacPhail Center for Music. Participants will be dropped off at Mill City Museum each day and will walk to each participating organization (all within three blocks from the museum.) Registration can be made through Mill City Museum by calling 612-341-7556 or at the calendar online at www.mnhs.org/summercamps.

How to Register for Summer Camps
1. Call student services to register 612.321.0100.
2. Upon completion of registration a confirmation letter will be sent to you as well as a student information form. Complete the information form and return to the camp coordinator by the designated deadline.
3. If an audition is necessary, please contact the camp coordinator to schedule a time.
4. MacPhail welcomes students of all ages, levels and needs. If you or your child have unique needs or learning styles, please share this information with us to ensure the best possible placement and success in our programs.
