Financial Aid for 2008-2009

To apply for MacPhail’s Financial Aid Program, please complete the entire application and attach a copy of your most recently filed federal income tax form (1040, 1040A, 1040EZ). This information is confidential. Awards are based on need. The amount of financial aid is determined by a sliding scale, which takes into account household income and number of exemptions.

Deadline:                          
Return your completed materials to MacPhail Center for Music. Applications must be delivered to MacPhail by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, July 11, 2008. FAXES ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE. Applications received after the deadline will be considered only if funds are available.

How to Apply:               
1. Complete all sections of the Financial Aid Application, including the Letter of Agreement.
Only complete, signed applications will be considered.

                                               
2. Attach a copy of your most recently filed federal income tax form (1040, 1040A, 1040EZ). If you do not file a federal income tax form, please submit copies of other verification of income and/or support.

3. Call the Student Services Center at 612-321-0100 for help completing the application.

4. Applications from students with a past due balance will not be considered until the balance is paid in full.

Award:                               

1. Reduced tuition based on a sliding scale for lessons, classes or ensembles.

2. Award applies to fall semester and spring semester only.

3. Families with students who have studied at least one year at MacPhail may request aid for more than one activity per student.

4. Being awarded financial aid does not guarantee placement. Classes may be full, auditions may be required, or a requested activity may be age inappropriate. Call Student Services for more information regarding placement and registration.

Award Expectations:
Consistent attendance at lessons, classes or ensembles.
Consistent practice and preparation for lessons, classes or ensembles.
Positive evaluations from teacher.
Recipient must pay tuition bills not covered by financial aid.

Registration:                 
Recipients of Financial Aid will be notified of their award no later than July 25, 2008. Re-registration forms for current students will be mailed by mid July, registration for classes and ensembles will begin with the availability of the Fall Catalog, and placement for new Individual Instruction students will begin August 4, 2008. Early Childhood Arts classes in particular fill quickly. If you’d like to register for a class prior to receiving your award, call Student Services at 612-321-0100 to make a 25% down-payment and guarantee a space in the class of your choice.

Deadlines to Claim Award:
Fall semester awards must be claimed by Tuesday, September 2, 2008. To claim an award, you must pay tuition not covered by the award by this date. Failure to do so will result in the loss of aid for the unpaid activities.

Spring semester awards must be claimed by Monday, January 26, 2009. Failure to pay tuition not covered by the award by this date will result in the loss of aid.

Only complete Financial Aid Applications will be considered. Incomplete applications will be returned as time permits. If there are more eligible applications than funds available for awards, applications will be awarded in the order received, with preference given to continuing MacPhail families. Performance Scholarships (this information will be updated shortly)

A number of performance scholarships are awarded to current and potential students based on performance excellence. These scholarships are supported by funds donated to MacPhail specifically for this purpose. Awards range from $300-$1,200 and must be used for study at MacPhail on the designated instrument (or voice) during the following semester. Applications will be available on April 11, 2008 and are due by Saturday, May 17.  INSTRUMENTAL auditions will take place on Saturday, June 7.  VOCAL auditions will take place on Saturday, June 14.

Piano: Theone Walker Brown Scholarship, Agnes Barnwell Saunders Kemp Scholarship, Gary Sipes Scholarship, Theodore Bergman Scholarship

General:
E. Jerome Carlson Scholarship

Voice
: Mary Ann Kimball Scholarship, Jessica Schwartzbauer McDonald Memorial Scholarship, Oksana Bryn Scholarship

Woodwind
: Ruben Haugen Woodwind Scholarship

Violin: Mary West Scholarship, Robert Bland Memorial Suzuki Scholarship

Edith B. Norberg Scholarships
are awarded to students who demonstrate artistic excellence and have a sincere interest in developing their music skills as related to religious music.

Composition Scholarship
For composers of all ages this scholarship is for composition study based on the quality of original music submitted, potential as a composer, recommendation and personal interest in music.

Need-Based Scholarships
For extremely dedicated students. The Willie B. Hale Scholarship is awarded to a voice student of color. The Dr. Shin Tanaka Piano Memorial Scholarship are awarded to piano students in high school and younger.
