Cathy Smetana

Piano instructor, Cathy Smetana, enjoys teaching students of all ages, creating independent musicians who can problem-solve and practice on their own, thereby equipping them for a lifetime of musical enjoyment. She loves teaching beginners, instilling in them good habits right from the beginning, as well as working with busy teenagers, helping them achieve great results in spite of their busy schedules. Cathy has been teaching for 20 plus years and has been at MacPhail since 2000. She is also the co-coordinator of the Piano Camp in the summer.

Outside of teaching, some highlights of her performance career include performing Bach’s St. John Passion with Helmuth Rilling and the Philadelphia Orchestra; the Hindemith Requiem with Wolfgang Sawallisch and Thomas Hampson; and a Christmas concert in Carnegie Hall.

Cathy holds a Bachelor of Music degree with an emphasis in piano performance from Goshen College and a Master of Music degree in piano performance and pedagogy from the Westminster Choir College of Rider University.

“Great instruction, maintains and increases student’s interest and love of music.”
