Haviland, MargaretViola, Violin
Margaret Haviland, instructor of viola and violin, and chamber music coach at MacPhail has been on the faculty since 1993. She teaches in both the Suzuki and traditional methods. An instructor for more than 25 years, Margaret enjoys working with students ages 4–18, as well as adult students. An element of Margaret’s teaching is tone production, resonance with intonation, and musicality. She helps her students discover the joy and passion for music performance and participation.
As a performer, Margaret has played with the Mexico State Symphony Orchestra, regional orchestras in Iowa, Joffrey Ballet, Spoleto Festival, the Arizona Opera Company, and the S. Dakota Symphony Orchestra. She is presently a freelance violist in the Twin Cities area, and has served as a guest viola workshop clinician at “Viola Days” in Eau Claire, at the University of Northern Iowa’s Suzuki Strings/Prep Program, and with the Suzuki program in Northfield.
Margaret earned her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Iowa and her Master of Music at Arizona State University. Performance and pedagogy studies with William and Doris Preucil, David Holland, and William Magers.
