On faculty at MacPhail since 2013 mezzo-soprano Victoria Vargas’ opera credits include over fifteen roles for the Minnesota Opera, and performances with Opera Theater of Saint Louis, Chautauqua Opera, Sarasota Opera, Ash Lawn Highland Festival, and the Lyric Opera of the North. She recently sang the title role of Carmen for the Minnesota Opera and the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra. She will be reprising the role of Dritte Dame in Minnesota Opera’s innovative production of Die Zauberflöte.
Equally comfortable in concert work Mrs. Vargas has premiered as an Alto Soloist in Messiah for both the Buffalo, NY Philharmonic Orchestra, and members of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. Other concerts include Carmen (Carmen) selections with Mankato Symphony, and concerts with the Chautauqua Symphony, St.Cloud Orchestra, Western New York Chamber Orchestra, the Wayzata Symphony Orchestra, and in the 2015/16 she will perform Daron Hagen’s Symphony No. 5 with the Phoenix Symphony and the Beethoven Mass in C with the South Dakota Symphony.
Mrs.Vargas placed second in the Upper Midwest region of the Metropolitan Opera Council Auditions, and first place in the Minnesota district. She has placed second in the Schubert Club competition and was a finalist in the Irene Dalis Vocal Competition. In addition to her teaching at MacPhail Mrs. Vargas is on faculty at Carleton College. She has her Bachelors of Music from the State University of New York at Fredonia, and her Masters of Music from the Manhattan School of Music.
