Bob Dorer, Trumpet |
Downtown Minneapolis |
Robert Dorer joined the Minnesota Orchestra in 1997 as second trumpet, after performing six seasons as principal trumpet with the New Mexico Symphony. He was previously a member of the Sante Fe Opera Orchestra, Santa Fe Pro Musica, Florida West Coast Symphony, and performed as guest principal with the New Zealand Symphony .
Dorer received a Bachelor of Music degree from Northwestern University, where he studied with Vincent Cichowicz, former second trumpet of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. After graduating from Northwestern, Dorer studied with Arnold Jacobs, former tubist with the Chicago Symphony and renowned teacher of wind instrument breathing techniques.
An avid chamber musician, Dorer performed and recorded for five years as a member of the Florida Brass Quintet. He has also performed chamber music at several Sommerfest chamber performances and in the Minnesota Orchestra's chamber series at MacPhail School of Music, and has appeared as a soloist with orchestras in Florida, North Carolina, New Mexico, and Minnesota .
Dorer enjoys teaching, and he spent seven summers on the faculty of the Brevard Music Center in North Carolina. At Vincent Cichowicz' recommendation, Dorer was interviewed for the book Back to Basics , an analysis of Cichowicz' teaching method. Dorer is a Sonare Trumpet Artist and has taught Master classes at high schools and colleges throughout Minnesota .

Alumni in the spotlight:
Rueben Lange
Rueben graduated from South High School in Minneapolis in the Spring of 2007, and spent the next year working full-time at the Linden Hills Co-op deli, while preparing auditions for college, training for the Big Ride Across America. In mid-August, he completed 50 days riding across the US in the heat of the summer to raise money and awareness for the American Lung Association. The ride is an annual event, and this year there were 40 riders ranging in age from 19-69. To train for this event, Rueben also worked part-time as a bike messenger. He enjoyed the game-like elements of the job including navigation skills and quick reflexes, but he especially loved getting paid to ride his bike.
At MacPhail, Rueben studied clarinet with Nina Olsen for 8 years and guitar with Craig Anderson for 2. During his junior and senior years of high school, Rueben enrolled in the Certificate Program and designed a varied program of study which included jazz piano studies with Chris Granias, rock band and participation in the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Greater Twin CIties Youth Symphonies.
This fall, Rueben begins his freshman year at Lewis and Clark college in Oregon. At the moment, he's looking forward to a degree focusing on ethnomusicology. Rueben is looking forward to the openstructure of the program at Lewis and Clark, and the many students who are excellent players while majoring in subjects other than music also appealed to him. Given his past history, this sounds like the perfect program for him. Best of luck Rueben!

MacPhail Alumni:
Lindsay Lewis graduated from Henry Sibley HS in 2000, after spending 13 years in public school and 15 years at MacPhail. She began piano instruction with Nancy Carson at the age of three, but by the time she graduated her focus had been percussion for many years. Lindsay was a founding member of Rimshots, and travelled with them to France. While attending college at Wellesley, Lindsay took lessons for one year at Berklee, and played recreationally. Her focus was a double degree in cognitive science and studio art. After a few years spent working in and directing laboratories which studied early memory development, Lindsay returned to the Twin Cities to find a career in the arts. Today we find Lindsay sitting in her office on the third floor of MacPhail, where she is the assistant to Presidents Paul Babcock and Brian Braden. Lindsay began working for MacPhail during the transition from old building to new, and made herself so invaluable that she was asked to stay. She has returned to her roots in more ways than one, performing in Rimshots several times since she's returned.
