Opportunities for Songwriting

Beginning songwriting can start when the child can confidently read and write.  For more advanced songwriting, it’s best to have a few years of instruction on their instrument.   Choose from individual lessons, shared lessons and camps.  For questions, contact us at 612-321-0100 or contact@macphail.org.

Come and discover the Suzuki Early Childhood Education Class this summer during the MacPhail Suzuki Institute!

SECE is a program in which a mixed age group of children meet weekly during the school year, building on concepts and skills laid out in the SECE repertoire while interacting with one another, their parents, and the teachers.

The parent plays a central role in all activities in the belief that the parent is the child?s first and most important teacher. Through parent participation in prenatal, baby, and preschool classes, parents become partners in providing an enriched natural environment for the growth of their children.
This class is offered for children ages 0-3 years old with a parent or caregiver. A perfect class for younger siblings! Suzuki ECE seeks to build on the child's natural delight in learning and lays the foundation for life-long learning that meets Dr. Suzuki's goals for all children - to create an environment for children, free from pressure, in which they can gain skills, a sense of purpose in life, an understanding of discipline, and an appreciation of beauty.

Prerequisite: Registration in Spring semester SECE class. Continuing students may register online.

NEW FAMILIES: Please contact Kamini LaRusso at larusso.kamini@macphail.org to inquire about joining a class.

The MacPhail Woodwind Quintet is a performance-oriented ensemble comprised of high school students chosen by competitive audition. In addition to presenting their own recitals at MacPhail, the group will perform in the community and audition for MacPhail Honors Recitals, Minnesota Varsity and the SPCO Chamber Music Competition (as their schedules allow.)

The MacPhail Woodwind Quintet, coached by Dr. Nina Olsen, focuses on ensemble playing and musicianship. Repertoire is chosen to challenge students individually and to explore a cross-section of the Woodwind Quintet repertoire.
Rehearsals are scheduled roughly every other week for 2 hours at the Minneapolis location. Scheduling is determined by student availability, and will be arranged once the ensemble has been formed.

For the audition, students should prepare scales and two brief solos or etudes representing their expressive and technical abilities. In order to allow as many students as possible the opportunity to audition, auditions for the ensemble will be pre-recorded rather than live. DVDs, drop-box files and You Tube links will be accepted. Application forms and audition videos must be submitted by midnight on Friday, September 8, 2017. No auditions will be judged prior to September 9. All students will be notified of their audition
results by September 12, 2017.

For information about specific scale requirements per instrument and instructions for recording and submitting your video file, please contact Nina Olsen at 612-767-5317 or olsen.nina@macphail.org.

Registration cost for a full year's participation in the Quintet is $287/semester plus registration and processing fees. There are no additional fees for performances or competition entries.

The MacPhail Center for Music is committed to presenting quality musical experiences to all students. Interested students should take the audition. After the auditions have been judged, students invited to be in the Quintet will have the opportunity to submit apply for financial aid if the cost of tuition will be a barrier to participation.

SECE is a program in which a mixed age group of children meet weekly, building on concepts and skills laid out in the SECE repertoire while interacting with one another, their parents, and the teachers. The parent plays a central role in all activities in the belief that the parent is the child's first and most important teacher. Through parent participation in prenatal, baby, and preschool classes, parents become partners in providing an enriched natural environment for the growth of their children. This class is offered for children ages 0-3 years old with a parent or caregiver.
Some of the skills developed in the weekly SECE classes are: listening and sequencing, number, pitch, motor, social-emotional development, vocabulary and character development.

At MacPhail, we believe that all children should have an opportunity to experience the arts. In Making Music with Friends, you can expect non-musical, functional skills to be addressed as well: turn taking, attention to task, and other necessary skills for integration into other activities. Along with fun songs, movement, games, art projects, your child can benefit in many areas. The class uses curriculum adapted from our Sing, Play, Learn with MacPhail? program for children with autism, ADD or ADHD.
