Gamelan Ensemble

Sumunar Gamelan Ensemble Concert

MacPhail Center for Music, Antonello Hall
501 South Second Street, Minneapolis 55401
FREE ADMISSION

GAMELAN is a centuries-old instrumental music tradition of Indonesia, still vital there and now practiced worldwide. The sound is unique—chiming, bell-like, likened poetically to “flowing water.” The word itself identifies a set of gleaming, highly decorated, bronze-and-wood instruments, primarily percussion but including a few strings and winds. The Sumunar Ensembles bring this musical genre, specifically that of the island of Java, to the Twin Cities and beyond. The program will feature the well-established Sumunar adult ensemble, and will include selections by the two youth ensembles. You will experience time-tested traditional pieces as well as lively, new compositions. You will also be treated to two examples of Indonesian classical dance, which features controlled, flowing movement and colorful, intricate costumes. Basic principles of gamelan musical structure will be explained, your questions will be addressed, and after the program you will be offered the opportunity for hands-on acquaintance with the gamelan instruments. Come and enjoy the sound and sight of gamelan in a comfortable, family setting.

Note: MacPhail will offer a “Gamelan Camp” for students ages 8-11 from June 21-25, 2010. Discover a fascinating new kind of music—learn to play traditional Indonesian music on the spectacular set of instruments known as a gamelan. You will play gongs of various sizes, metallophones and other instruments that join together in this form of collaborative music making. No previous musical experience is needed.
