Master Classes Series
In a master class, students perform for and are coached by a master teacher before a large audience. MacPhail’s Master Class Series is one of the most highly regarded in the country, with guest artists like pianist Leon Fleisher and violinist Pamela Frank. Whether you are a student, teacher or just a music fan, master classes serve as a valuable resource for improving technique, and gaining insights about interpretation and artistry. The student performers are selected through competitive auditions. Audition applications are available at the Student Services Center. The Bach’s Lunch Series is a monthly series of informal lunch hour performances by MacPhail teaching artists. The programs occur from 12:15-1:00 p.m. on the first Friday of every month from October to May. The series offers eclectic music performances that are entertaining and informative, and as diverse as MacPhail’s teaching faculty. Along with the performances, the faculty performers discuss the historical background and defining characteristics of the music being played. Free coffee and treats are provided. Arrive early to get a good seat, and feel free to bring your lunch! For more information visit the events page on MacPhail’s website at macphail.org
Concerto and Aria Concert
This concert is MacPhail’s premier performance event that features six student soloists performing with an orchestra of professional musicians under the baton of an acclaimed guest conductor. The concert celebrates the highest honor that a MacPhail student can achieve. Student soloists are selected by two rounds of competitive auditions. The student soloists receive award certificates and a special reception is held in their honor. Audition applications are available in the Fall of 2008 at the Student Services Center.
Honors Recitals Celebrate the talents of MacPhail’s finest student performers at an Honors Recital. Four recitals are scheduled to take place in the fall and spring semesters. Student performers are selected through competitive auditions. Formal invitations are mailed to a guest list of each student performer and a special reception is held after the recital to honor each student’s achievement. Audition applications are available at MacPhail’s Student Services Center.
All-School Recitals Listen to and perform with other musicians. Recitals are separated into Adult and Youth Recitals. All-School Recitals are informal, accompanied experiences and open to all students. No audition required – just your teacher’s recommendation.
Department Recognition Recitals Each department holds recognition recitals each year to honor students who have not been selected to perform in an Honors Recital or the Concerto and Aria Concert. Selection is done through teacher recommendation.
Department Recitals Each department holds a number of department recitals throughout the school year. These recitals are designed to meet the needs of the students in each department and to provide an opportunity for students to interact with and hear other students perform on the same instrument.
Studio Recitals Many teachers will host recitals for the students in their studio once or twice each year. These recitals are a wonderful opportunity for students to perform in an informal setting with their peers in the same instrument area. It’s also a great chance to get to know some of the other students that study with your teacher. Check with your teacher for dates and times.
Saturday Musical Matinee Free, informal concerts by MacPhail students in the lobby. Drop in any Saturday from mid-October through mid-May. Concerts begin at 12:45 p.m. and are free and open to the public. Ask your teacher about these performances.
Crescendo Gala Performances Students chosen through an adjudication procedure perform in a recital specifically designed for Crescendo students.
