In MacPhail brass ensembles, students challenge one another throughout the semester to form the best ensemble possible. Under the guidance of low brass instructor Karl Wiederwohl, students assess their strengths and weaknesses, consider how they affect their colleagues, and ultimately determine the quality of the ensemble's musical product. Dr. Wiederwohl fosters an environment where players can enjoy the thrill of achieving excellence while also learning to tactfully discuss when improvements need to be made. Dr. Wiederwohl's ensembles are open to brass students of any age or ability willing to check their ego at the door and brave enough to risk failure in pursuit of success. (Groups typically contain a range of ability levels. Great care is taken to match players with parts congruous to their skill level.)

Suzuki Early Childhood Education (SECE) is a program in which a mixed age group of children meet weekly, building on concepts and skills laid out in the SECE repertoire while interacting with one another, their parents, and the teachers. The parent plays a central role in all activities in the belief that the parent is the child's first and most important teacher. Through parent participation in prenatal, baby, and preschool classes, parents become partners in providing an enriched natural environment for the growth of their children. This class is offered for children ages 0-3 years old with a parent or caregiver.
Some of the skills developed in the weekly SECE classes are: listening and sequencing, number, pitch, motor, social-emotional development, vocabulary and character development.
Suzuki ECE seeks to build on the child's natural delight in learning and lays the foundation for life-long learning that meets Dr. Suzuki's goals for all children - to create an environment for children, free from pressure, in which they can gain skills, a sense of purpose in life, an understanding of discipline, and an appreciation of beauty.

Classes are ongoing, and new students are invited to join as space becomes available each semester. New families are welcome to inquire for class information and be placed on a waiting list for enrollment.

For adults with child ages 9-12

Bring along your creative grandchild and your own budding artistic side on this fun-filled week of inspiration, entertainment and delight. Together, bring your brilliant ideas to life as you bang a drum at the MacPhail Center for Music, bake your own cookies at the Mill City Museum, create a one-of-a-kind book at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts and put on a skit at the Guthrie Theater. Highlights
* Learn acting and character-development techniques to bring your past to life at the Pritzker Award-winning Guthrie Theater, and attend a performance.
* Discover the unique satisfaction that comes with creating a book - design beautifully patterned paper, print images on a printing press and bind your own book to take home.
* Experience the joy of making music together as you learn from faculty at the MacPhail Center for Music how to play an instrument and create a song. Also, work as a team at the Mill City Museum to make a unique cookie recipe and develop a mini-marketing scheme.

In MacPhail brass consorts, students challenge one another throughout the semester to form the best ensemble possible.

The MacPhail Woodwind Quintet is a performance-oriented ensemble comprised of high school students chosen by competitive audition. In addition to presenting their own recitals at MacPhail, the group will perform in the community and audition for MacPhail Honors Recitals, Minnesota Varsity and the SPCO Chamber Music Competition (as their schedules allow.)

The MacPhail Woodwind Quintet, coached by Dr. Nina Olsen, focuses on ensemble playing and musicianship. Repertoire is chosen to challenge students individually and to explore a cross-section of the Woodwind Quintet repertoire.

Rehearsals are scheduled roughly every other week for 2 hours at the Minneapolis location. Scheduling is determined by student availability, and will be arranged once the ensemble has been formed.

For the audition, students should prepare scales and two brief solos or etudes representing their expressive and technical abilities. In order to allow as many students as possible the opportunity to audition, auditions for the ensemble will be pre-recorded rather than live. DVDs, drop-box files and You Tube links will be accepted. Application forms and audition videos must be submitted by Friday, September 27, 2019. No auditions will be judged prior to September 28.

For information about specific scale requirements per instrument and instructions for recording and submitting your video file, please contact Nina Olsen at 612-767-5317 or olsen.nina@macphail.org.

Registration cost for a full year's participation in the Quintet is $300/semester plus registration and processing fees. There are no additional fees for performances or competition entries.

The MacPhail Center for Music is committed to presenting quality musical experiences to all students. Interested students should take the audition. After the auditions have been judged, students invited to be in the Quintet will have the opportunity to submit apply for financial aid if the cost of tuition will be a barrier to participation.
