Unwrapping Music: You Say ‘Potato’ & I Say ‘Po-TAH-to’
6 sessions, April 21-May 26
Male composers have struggled with expressing women’s emotions for centuries, and women composers have likewise attempted to explain or illustrate men’s experiences in their music. In this class, we look at assumptions made by composers of different genders and how they play out in the way they use their musical toolboox. From Clara Schumann setting lyrics by Goethe and Rilke, to Puccini repeatedly killing off sacrificial heroines, to modern-day artists like Janelle Monae who turn cliches about gender on their heads.
