Singing leading roles with the Minnesota Opera, National Opera, F/M Opera and Opera 101, MacPhail voice teacher Mary Laymon brings a wealth of experience to her students. Her teaching style can be described as fairly fluid, teaching a good deal of breathing and technique and use of repertoire choices to enhance and build voices. She enjoys working with students of all ages, from 16 to 75 years, and although she prefers to work in classical and Broadway, she has taught some jazz.
Mary has appeared on stage in a wide variety of roles, both operatic and theatrical. She has sung Cio-cio-san in Madame Butterfly with the Minnesota Opera; Countess Almaviva in The Marriage of Figaro and Nedda in Paggliacci. She has also performed many orchestral concerts and is at home on the recital stage as well. Her favorite performances have been on smaller stages where the interaction with the audiences is more intense.
Mary attended Moorhead State University where she received her Bachelor of Arts in vocal performance and her Master of Music in vocal performance from the University of Minnesota.
“Mary, is extremely patient and very knowledgeable. She puts 100% of herself into a lesson which helps me as a student want to work and learn as best I can.”
“She really works hard to make sure that I understand the material being taught and works with me on things that I am not doing well at.”
