Christopher Olson, guitar instructor, returned to the MacPhail faculty in 2019. He has previously taught at the McNally Smith College of Music, the University of St Thomas, Luther College, and the Shell Lakes Arts Center. He focuses on lessons, music theory, history, jazz studies, improvisation, and ensembles.
He has taught many classes with rigid syllabi but is an improviser who prefers to react to each individual learner. Private lessons allow him to cater to the specific needs of students, giving them material that will inspire them to practice.
Chris has performed alone and with groups of all sizes, and as a guest artist or clinician, at events and venues throughout the Midwest. Chris’ guitar playing is featured on many recordings, some of which include his original compositions, and he is currently part of several active ensembles. He has shared the stage with internationally renowned artists, including Ingrid Jensen, Tierney Sutton, and Maria Schneider, and with local, Twin Cities musicians, such as Debbie Duncan, Joan Griffith, and Laura Caviani. He holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and a Master of Music from the University of North Texas.
