Music Therapy Student Stories-Sam

Sam, age 20, Music Therapy

Sam, a 20 year old with Down syndrome and autism, was completely non-verbal when he started music therapy at MacPhail’s Apple Valley location. While he used some sign language, he had closed down and isolated himself. But in eight months of working with his music therapist, Sam has blossomed and can now say short phrases like “I feel happy!” Music Therapy works because it uses so much more of the brain, building neural pathways to promote functional skills, such as communication, attention and movement. It may seem like small steps, but his father tears up when he says, “Sam can now even say ‘night dad.’” That’s positive change!
