PATHWAYS TO PERFORMANCE
Kya Brown, age 14
Music has taught Kya that growth is achieved through practice and consistency. Quite an accomplishment for someone who is only 14 years old! Always encouraged by her mother to explore her interests and embrace new challenges, Kya began group piano lessons as a 4th grade transfer student to Whittier International Elementary School, one of MacPhail’s school partners. Students at Whittier begin their partnership experience in Kindergarten and by 3rd grade can participate in group piano or violin class. As a Pathways to Performance school, scholarships are awarded to students, like Kya, offering them even more opportunities to participate in MacPhail programs. “Without these scholarships, I don’t know if I could have afforded the opportunity to send my child to one of the best music schools in the country,” said Kya’s mom, Linda. Kya, now a freshman in high school, continues to excel, coming in as runner-up in the Miss Black Minnesota Pageant, confirming once again that she is capable of doing anything if she puts forth the effort and dedication to achieve.
