Partnership Stories-William, Ascension

25 YEARS OF MUSIC ACCESS, A NEW YEAR OF LEARNING
William, Age 9

For William, a 4th grader at Ascension Catholic School, music is a creative outlet that breaks up his normal school day. Between some of his favorite subjects, like math and science, he likes to be able to, “…sit down and create. It’s fun and relaxing, but also exciting. I really like the cello and making stuff up on the piano!” William is one of many kids from Ascension of North Minneapolis that has been able to experience a strategically tailored music program through a school partnership with MacPhail. 2015 marks 25 years with Ascension; it is MacPhail’s first school partnership and serves as the backbone for success to our now 90+ community partnerships. As a 4th grader, William has already completed four years of MacPhail’s general music curriculum at Ascension, introducing musical concepts and Early Childhood Music to students in kindergarten. Now, William is beginning the second phase of the program in which he comes to MacPhail’s state-of-the-art downtown headquarters for lessons on stringed instruments. “I’m excited to start going to MacPhail!” he says. William’s mother, Rosalynn, believes that music is an important part of having a well-rounded education and MacPhail and Ascension “offer something to these kids that would otherwise not be accessible, and for William, I think it’s helped give him a sense of pride and accomplishment.”
