What is MacPhail Suzuki Talent Education?

The MacPhail Suzuki program is one of the largest and most established Suzuki programs in the country and one of the only places to offer comprehensive Suzuki lessons in Minnesota! Suzuki lessons are offered on harp, guitar, violin, viola, cello, flute and piano for students as early as age 3 through high school.

The Suzuki approach to music is based on the belief that young children can learn to play a musical instrument the same way they learn to speak their native language – through listening, repetition, encouragement and parental involvement! Parent, child and teacher form the “Suzuki Triangle” to create a long-term, collaborative learning experience.

With Suzuki, a comprehensive learning experience is created with weekly individual lessons at the core of the instruction. In addition to weekly lessons, tuition includes:

  • regular group lessons
  • studio recitals
  • workshops
  • orchestras
  • reading classes
  • advanced ensembles
  • international tours

The MacPhail Woodwind Quintet is a performance-oriented ensemble comprised of high school students chosen by competitive audition. In addition to presenting their own recitals at MacPhail, the group will perform in the community and audition for MacPhail Honors Recitals, MPR?s Minnesota Varsity Competition and the SPCO Chamber Music Competition.

The MacPhail Woodwind Quintet, coached by Dr. Nina Olsen, focuses on ensemble playing and musicianship. Repertoire is chosen to challenge students individually and to explore a cross-section of the Woodwind Quintet repertoire. Rehearsals are scheduled roughly every other week for 2 hours at the MacPhail Minneapolis location. (14 rehearsals, October-April). Scheduling is determined by student availability, and will be arranged once the ensemble has been formed.

For the audition, students should prepare scales and two brief solo(s) or etude(s) representing their expressive and technical abilities. Only video auditions will be accepted. Suitable formats include physical dvds, drop-box files and You Tube links. Application forms and audition videos must be submitted by midnight on Friday, September 9, 2016. No auditions will be judged prior to Saturday, September 10. All students will be notified of their audition results by Wednesday, September 14, 2016. For information about specific scale requirements per instrument and instructions for recording and submitting your video file, please contact Nina Olsen at 612-767-5317, or olsen.nina@macphail.org.

Rehearsing and performing with the MacPhail Woodwind Quintet is a year-long commitment. Tuition is $280/semester. Students are expected to register for both the fall and spring semester. Financial aid is available.

The MacPhail Center for Music is committed to presenting quality musical experiences to all students. Interested students should take the audition. After the auditions have been judged, students invited to be in the Quintet will have the opportunity to apply for financial aid if the cost of tuition will be a barrier to participation.

SECE is a program in which a mixed age group of children meet weekly, building on concepts and skills laid out in the SECE repertoire while interacting with one another, their parents, and the teachers. The parent plays a central role in all activities in the belief that the parent is the child's first and most important teacher. Through parent participation in prenatal, baby, and preschool classes, parents become partners in providing an enriched natural environment for the growth of their children. This class is offered for children ages 0-3 years old with a parent or caregiver.
Some of the skills developed in the weekly SECE classes are: listening and sequencing, number, pitch, motor, social-emotional development, vocabulary and character development.
Suzuki ECE seeks to build on the child's natural delight in learning and lays the foundation for life-long learning that meets Dr. Suzuki's goals for all children - to create an environment for children, free from pressure, in which they can gain skills, a sense of purpose in life, an understanding of discipline, and an
appreciation of beauty.
