Intro to Scales and the Major Scale (1/5)

Things to play on your instrument:

  • Start on the tonic of the scale and play the scale all the way up to the next tonic
  • Turn on one of these play along tracks and improvise using the major scale. Try to make your melody interesting.

Things to play on your instrument:
Pick a major scale and start on the lowest pitch that your instrument plays. Play that scale all the way up to the highest pitch your instrument plays. This will help you recognize respelled scales.

Natural Minor Scale (3/5)

Things to play on your instrument:
Pick a natural minor scale. Play the natural minor scale up and down for one octave. Then play the RELATIVE major scale. Do the same with all the natural minor scales and their PARALLEL major scale.

Things to play on your instrument:
Harmonic Minor: Play each harmonic minor scale, by “wandering” around. In other words, start the scale and change direction(up or down) whenever you feel like it. Make sure to emphasize the raised 7th scale degree.
