In MacPhail online brass ensembles, students challenge one another throughout the semester to form the best ensemble possible. Under the guidance of low brass instructor Karl Wiederwohl, students assess their strengths and weaknesses, consider how they affect their colleagues, and ultimately determine the quality of the ensemble's musical product. Dr. Wiederwohl fosters an environment where players can enjoy the thrill of achieving excellence while also learning to tactfully discuss when improvements need to be made. Dr. Wiederwohl's ensembles are open to brass students of any age or ability who are willing to check their ego at the door and brave enough to risk failure in pursuit of success. Groups typically contain a range of ability levels. Great care is taken to match players with parts congruous to their skill level. Groups will be scheduled after players are matched together.

If you are interested in joining an ensemble, please contact Karl Wiederwohl at wiederwohl.karl@macphail.org to discuss which group is right for you.

* Please wait to register for an ensemble until after you have been placed into a group.

Broadway Sing Along Series
Tuition: $60

This is your chance to be part of the chorus for some of your favorite Broadway shows! Each month we’ll focus on a different musical taking 30 minutes to introduce you to some of the background and notable aspects of the show, then invite you to join us as teaching artists Joey Clark, Andrea Leap, Jerry Rubino and Vicky Mountain (along with other MacPhail faculty guest artists) lead us through the hits. Song sheets will be emailed prior to the event. Participants will be muted, so you can choose to lip-sync or belt out the tunes as you see fit – we’ll never know! In any case, you’re in for a musical adventure with these vocal guides.

September 25: You might not be able to attend the great Minnesota Get-Together, but we’ll bring you State Fair hits such as “It’s a Grand Night for Singing”, “It Might as Well be Spring” and “Isn’t it Kind of Fun?” You supply the pronto pups and mini donuts, we’ll bring the entertainment!

October 16: We could all use “plenty of heart and plenty of hope” as we deal with the challenges we face today, so let’s visit the musical Oklahoma that boasts of these in the title song. You won’t even need to hook up your “Surry with a Fringe on Top”; just click the zoom link to be transported to another place and time!

November 20: You’ll be in for a “Bushel and a Peck” of fun with the lively show Guys and Dolls! Fedoras and mink stoles optional – bedroom slippers encouraged for this living room performance.

January 15: We won’t have to trick you into falling in love with The Fantasticks while singing songs like “Try to Remember”, “Much More” or “Never Say No”. It will literally be a fantastic way to start off the new year!

Participate live online via Zoom.

Join us for this unique, online learning experience combining instruction in composition with instruction in recording and mixing. Each week students will focus on a different aspect of composition such as melody, bass line, harmony and rhythm while learning to write for specific instruments. On top of that students will also learn about DAW (digital audio workstations) and will be separated into groups based on their experience level. Finally, students will experiment with mixing tracks of their own compositions recorded by professional musicians. At the end of the class students will have a complete digital recording of their original composition that can be presented at the MacPhail Composition Recital via Zoom on Sunday, Jan. 31, 2021.

Introducing MacPhail's new leveled jazz combo program, designed to help students improve their improvisation skills and musicianship while playing with students of similar skill level. As students progress, they will be placed in more advanced combos with more advanced players. Combos will perform at MacPhail and various venues throughout the Twin Cities.

Students must audition to be placed in a combo. Video auditions for all combos, including the Dakota Combo, will be due on September 27. Combos will rehearse weekly from September-May. Days and times for combo rehearsals will be arranged after auditions.

MacPhail welcomes all instrumentalists and vocalists to participate in our jazz combos. Click on the link below for specific audition information for your instrument or voice.

Audition Guidelines

Student Information Form

Auditions can be an intimidating setting for many people. In the new jazz program at MacPhail, we are aiming to create an environment that fosters creativity and personal identity. When preparing for your audition please try to bring forth the best representation of yourself regardless of what you think we'd like to hear. Jazz, rock, pop, etc... Prepare anything that you feel comfortable playing, and show off who you are as an individual!

Greg Byers has decided to perform what he would play, if he were auditioning for a jazz ensemble at MacPhail. Remember all instruments are welcome to audition!

The MacPhail Community Youth Choir (MCYC) brings together youth in grades 6-12 throughout the Twin Cities area for music and friendship. The choir is led by Twin Cities artist J.D. Steele, of the famous Steele Family, who brings his dynamic style and passion for music to the group, which is free and open to students of all skill levels and talents. This group of energetic young people performs many styles of music including jazz, gospel, pop and East African.

MCYC performs at exciting events and venues throughout the Twin Cities such as Diversity Days at Target Field, The Civil Society Superbowl Safety Party for Youth at the Cedar Cultural Center, Governor Dayton's Inauguration, and as an opening act for former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's lecture at Northrup Auditorium. A thrilling highlight for the choir in 2012 was the opportunity to perform at the Flint Hills International Children?s Festival with Shangilia, a youth performance group from Nairobi, Kenya also under the direction of Steele. This exciting international project provided the MCYC youth the opportunity to engage with the youth choir in Kenya on a cultural and artistic level.

Weekly rehearsals will be live online or via recorded video on Saturdays from 10:00-12:00, beginning on September 14.

To learn how you can be a part of MCYC, contact Melissa Falb at 612.767.5438 or falb.melissa@macphail.org

Voices of Experience
Tuition: $130

Celebrate Minnesota's rich choral tradition and be a part of a partnership between MacPhail and the Minnesota Chorale. The Voices of Experience Choir is for adults over the age of 55 who want to be a part of a community of musicians, singing a variety of choral repertoire from genres such as classical, popular, folk and jazz. Though we are unable to meet in person, we will continue to sing as a community online through Zoom with the participants muted while the director leads guided warm ups, group masterclasses on topics such as vowel sounds and blend, and sectionals to learn new music that will be presented at a later date. Singers must be able to match pitch at an informal check with the director. Previous choral experience and the ability to read music or a strong ability to learn by ear is preferred.
