Opportunities for Composition – Theory

Beginning composition or theory can start when the child can confidently read and write.  For more advanced composition, it’s best to have a few years of instruction on their instrument.   Choose from individual lessons, shared lessons and camps.  For questions, contact us at 612-321-0100 or contact@macphail.org.

In MacPhail brass consorts, students challenge one another throughout the semester to form the best ensemble possible. Under the guidance of low brass instructor Karl Wiederwohl, students assess their strengths and weaknesses, consider how they affect their colleagues, and ultimately determine the quality of the ensemble's musical product. Dr. Wiederwohl fosters an environment where players can enjoy the thrill of achieving excellence while also learning to tactfully discuss when improvements need to be made. Dr. Wiederwohl's ensembles are open to brass students of any age or ability willing to check their ego at the door and brave enough to risk failure in pursuit of success. (Groups typically contain a range of ability levels. Great care is taken to match players with parts congruous to their skill level.)

The MacPhail String Quartet is performance-oriented quartet featuring some of the Twin Cities finest young string players chosen by competitive audition. Coached by MacPhail teaching artist, Jeremy Swider, the MacPhail String Quartet will perform in a variety of settings throughout the year and will receive regular coachings on ensemble playing techniques and musicianship. Coachings will begin in October on either Saturday afternoons or Tuesday evenings depending on the participants availability. In addition to presenting their own recitals at MacPhail, the group will perform in the community and audition for MacPhail Honors Recitals, Minnesota Varsity and the SPCO Chamber Music Competition, as their schedules allow.

For the audition students can prepare a polished solo or etude representing their ability level (no accompaniment) plus an excerpt (see below for links to the excerpt pdfs). Students may record two videos, one of their prepared piece and one video of their excerpt. Please upload the completed videos as an unlisted video to YouTube and send the links to swider.jeremy@macphail.org. Please also complete the Quartet Application (see below for a link to the form). The MacPhail Woodwind Quintet is a performance-oriented ensemble comprised of high school students chosen by competitive audition. In addition to presenting their own recitals at MacPhail, the group will perform in the community and audition for MacPhail Honors Recitals, Minnesota Varsity and the SPCO Chamber Music Competition (as their schedules allow.)

The MacPhail Woodwind Quintet, coached by Dr. Nina Olsen, focuses on ensemble playing and musicianship. Repertoire is chosen to challenge students individually and to explore a cross-section of the Woodwind Quintet repertoire.

Rehearsals are scheduled roughly every other week for 2 hours at the Minneapolis location. Scheduling is determined by student availability, and will be arranged once the ensemble has been formed.

For the audition, students should prepare scales and two brief solos or etudes representing their expressive and technical abilities. In order to allow as many students as possible the opportunity to audition, auditions for the ensemble will be pre-recorded rather than live. DVDs, drop-box files and You Tube links will be accepted. Application forms and audition videos must be submitted by 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 16, 2017. No auditions will be judged prior to September 16. All students will be notified of their audition
results by September 22, 2017.

For information about specific scale requirements per instrument and instructions for recording and submitting your video file, please contact Nina Olsen at 612-767-5317 or olsen.nina@macphail.org.

Registration cost for a full year's participation in the Quintet is $287/semester plus registration and processing fees. There are no additional fees for performances or competition entries.

The MacPhail Center for Music is committed to presenting quality musical experiences to all students. Interested students should take the audition. After the auditions have been judged, students invited to be in the Quintet will have the opportunity to submit apply for financial aid if the cost of tuition will be a barrier to participation.

The Overture Program is designed for any serious instrumentalist who is intending to pursue music in college and beyond or who is maybe considering music as a career and is simply interested in gaining more exposure to what that entails.. Overture is open to musicians/composers in grades 10-12, in any genre (classical, jazz, rock, etc.).

Overture will take place on Sunday afternoons from November through the end of April. Students will participate in weekly music theory lessons, professional development seminars, chamber music coachings, and other special Overture events. Overture is a two-semester program, it is recommended that students register for both the fall and spring semesters.

Additionally, students will receive guidance and advice from Overture faculty that will help to set and clarify short and long term goals allowing a certain degree of individualization to the program. The overarching goal of the program is to give the students the skills and knowledge to confidently purse their musical and career goals, whatever they may be.

Fall Semester: no audition is necessary. Entrance to the program will be determined by teacher recommendation.

Please note: Chamber Music will be added in the Spring Semester.

Suzuki Early Childhood Education (SECE) is a program in which a mixed age group of children meet weekly, building on concepts and skills laid out in the SECE repertoire while interacting with one another, their parents, and the teachers. The parent plays a central role in all activities in the belief that the parent is the child's first and most important teacher. Through parent participation in prenatal, baby, and preschool classes, parents become partners in providing an enriched natural environment for the growth of their children. This class is offered for children ages 0-3 years old with a parent or caregiver.
Some of the skills developed in the weekly SECE classes are: listening and sequencing, number, pitch, motor, social-emotional development, vocabulary and character development.
Suzuki ECE seeks to build on the child's natural delight in learning and lays the foundation for life-long learning that meets Dr. Suzuki's goals for all children - to create an environment for children, free from pressure, in which they can gain skills, a sense of purpose in life, an understanding of discipline, and an appreciation of beauty.

Classes are ongoing, and new students are invited to join as space becomes available each semester. New families are welcome to inquire for class information and be placed on a waiting list for enrollment.

Whether you've never taken voice lessons before or you have a few years of experience, Voice Camp is right for you. Students will work in small groups to develop their technique - improving their breathing, range and confidence. Through solos, duets and large ensemble pieces, students will study a variety of styles and genres including jazz, pop, musical theater and classical singing while continuing to expand their music reading skills. Each student will be expected to come to camp with a prepared, memorized vocal solo of any genre. The camp will conclude with a final concert for family and friends.
