In MacPhail brass ensembles, students challenge one another throughout the semester to form the best ensemble possible. Under the guidance of low brass instructor Karl Wiederwohl, students assess their strengths and weaknesses, consider how they affect their colleagues, and ultimately determine the quality of the ensemble's musical product. Dr. Wiederwohl fosters an environment where players can enjoy the thrill of achieving excellence while also learning to tactfully discuss when improvements need to be made. Dr. Wiederwohl's ensembles are open to brass students of any age or ability who are willing to check their ego at the door and brave enough to risk failure in pursuit of success. Groups typically contain a range of ability levels. Great care is taken to match players with parts congruous to their skill level.

If you are interested in joining an ensemble, please contact Karl Wiederwohl at wiederwohl.karl@macphail.org to discuss which group is right for you.

Audition Guidelines

Student Information Form

Auditions can be an intimidating setting for many people. In the new jazz program at MacPhail, we are aiming to create an environment that fosters creativity and personal identity. When preparing for your audition please try to bring forth the best representation of yourself regardless of what you think we'd like to hear. Jazz, rock, pop, etc... Prepare anything that you feel comfortable playing, and show off who you are as an individual!

Greg Byers has decided to perform what he would play, if he were auditioning for a jazz ensemble at MacPhail. Remember all instruments are welcome to audition!

SECE is a program in which a mixed age group of children meet weekly, building on concepts and skills laid out in the SECE repertoire while interacting with one another, their parents, and the teachers. The parent plays a central role in all activities in the belief that the parent is the child's first and most important teacher. Through parent participation in prenatal, baby, and preschool classes, parents become partners in providing an enriched natural environment for the growth of their children. This class is offered for children ages 0-3 years old with a parent or caregiver.

Some of the skills developed in the weekly SECE classes are: listening and sequencing, number, pitch, motor, social-emotional development, vocabulary and character development.

Suzuki ECE seeks to build on the child's natural delight in learning and lays the foundation for life-long learning that meets Dr. Suzuki's goals for all children - to create an environment for children, free from pressure, in which they can gain skills, a sense of purpose in life, an understanding of discipline, and an appreciation of beauty.

It provides a joyful, multi-dimensional experience for players that enhances and strengthens the body, mind and spirit! The only prerequisite to learning is a curiosity, openness, and a desire to have fun, move, and make music as a community! All cognitive and physical capacities are welcome and embraced.

Iris Shiraishi is a Music for Life? Instructor and joined the MacPhail faculty in 2014 . She holds degrees in Composition (BM, MFA), Arts Administration (MA) and Music Therapy (PhD) from the Universities of Hawai'i, Iowa and Minnesota.

In this six-week course, we will examine the correlation between visual art and music, studying how aesthetic trends manifested in various eras and regions. Join us as we examine the values that led to complementary artistic choices in visual art and music: Tudor architecture & the English madrigal; Gregorian chant & medieval paints; Chinese folksongs & Qing dynasty gardens; early jazz & the works of Beauford Delaney; and frontier art & cowboy songs.

The Connections and Contradictions Between Science and Music

This class will explore the many questions around the connection between science and music - why and how is rhythm hard-wired into our brains, how is melody created in birdsong, why do our bodies respond physiologically to different kinds of music, how does the science of acoustics apply in performance? Join us as we discuss these topics and the newest scientific breakthroughs in understanding how this art form functions on us as humans

Are you a dedicated and committed high school or college-level instrumentalist intent on refining your practice room process? This is for you! Do you want to learn more about how efficient practicing is the cornerstone of an effective audition process? Then the Deliberate Practice Bootcamp is definitely for you. You might be wondering "what can a timpanist really teach me about auditioning on my instrument?" Well, glad you asked! Whether it's a trombonist stating "If I were thinking of auditioning for an orchestra, I would sprint to this boot camp!" or an oboist praising "the 'Deliberate Practice Bootcamp' was one of the most inspired, intriguing and informative classes I have ever attended," you will come away from these sessions a better practicer, a better auditioner, and a better musician.

The Deliberate Practice Bootcamp evolved out of a one-of-a-kind semester-long class which Mr. Haaheim teaches at New York University. While that course was years in the making, Bootcamp attendees will get the "best of" material distilled into two intense evenings. Please consider joining us at the MacPhail Center for Music this June 28-29, 5:00-8:45pm! Open to all instrumentalists.

Tuition covers the cost of the seminar. Out-of-town participants are responsible for finding their own hotel accommodations and meals. MacPhail is located in downtown Minneapolis within walking distance of light rail transit for easy transportation to and from the airport.

Participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance for those wishing to apply for Continuing Education Credits.

Testimonials

"Jason Haaheim's teaching methods are not only for timpanists and percussionists, but apply to any musician trying to attain the highest level of performing. In fact, his principles could likely be applied to any number of professions outside of music. I was very taken with his straightforward approach, addressing all aspects of achieving excellence without it seeming daunting. If I were thinking of auditioning for an orchestra, or simply wanted a great method to gain consistency of a high level, I would sprint to this boot camp!"
John Rojak -- bass trombonist of the American Brass Quintet, NYU Professor of Trombone

"Jason Haaheim's presentation to our NYU undergraduate performance majors -- woodwinds, brass, strings and percussion -- was GREAT: an over-the-top hit with our students and faculty! Jason's multimedia approach to how to practice effectively, referred to as the 'Deliberate Practice Bootcamp' was one of the most inspired, intriguing and informative classes I have ever attended. Using scientific methods to perfect his art will show all who attend his classes the pathway to affective auditioning, performing and success."
Matt Sullivan -- Director of Wind Studies, NYU Professor of Oboe

"After working with Jason, my preparation and productivity had such a huge overhaul that I've improved more in the last two months than in the last two years."
Georgia Williams -- principal flute, Opera Australia Orchestra

Testimonials: "Jason's Timpani Summit last year made a HUGE difference in how I tackle the audition process. I credit the implementation of Jason's deliberate practice and organizational concepts as major factors in my recent audition successes.
